Yesterday I had the privilege of working with Lannette Phipps from the Rocky Point Times Newspaper in covering the award ceremonies for this prestigious event. I was networking on behalf of AMPI (Association of Mexico Real Estate Professionals) in promoting tourism for our community. In light of the news releases and university warning against coming to Mexico I wanted to hear from these university golfers how they felt coming to Mexico. To a person they were very happy to have come here, they felt safe as they enjoyed the golfing, the hospitality and our beautiful beaches. Several told me they will be telling their friends to come and enjoy the beaches, to take safety precauctions but they believe this area is a lot safer than being reported.
Puerto Peñasco is not like the border cities that are in the middle of fighting the drug cartels, the border crossing is Sonoyta is a small town with a very low crime rate, the highway to Puerto Peñasco is heavily patrolled even though there has not been a history of trouble on the highway. The city of Puerto Peñasco is a quiet fishing and tourism location with the whole community protecting it's most valuable resource, you the visitors. in 2008 2.6 million visitors made their way by car to this area that has a population less than 100,000 of mostly Mexican, American, and Canadians.
Now that you feel safe, lets talk about the golf, there were 90 golfers from 22 countries represented and every golfer I talked to really enjoyed their visit to Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point). A common remark was how beautiful and challenging the golf course was, how well the people were treating them and how they want to come back. A few records were established during this tournament, not only the first hole in one but two holes in one, a new course low round of 67 (come try to beat that here at the Mayan golf course), and this was the first time the Arizona Wildcat tournament was ever held outside of the US and obviously the first time here in Mexico. Interesting a Mexican gal won the tournament.
